The True story behind the Death of ANSU student

>>There was confusion and tension in Uli campus of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Igbariam, formerly Anambra State University when a student cultist of Mechanical Engineering Department known as ‘Small’ died during initiation ceremony. Anarchy would have been let loose but for the timely intervention of the Vice Chancellor of the University , Prof Fi delis Okafor, who mobilised security agencies to forestall further letting of blood in the campus. According to the Prof Okafor, the student died following the torture he sustained from active initiation ceremony. He said the anti-cult group stormed their initiation ceremony on a tip-off and while other members escaped, the victim who sustained serious injury could not escape and he was rushed to a hospital by the anti-cult group but he died. In other to cover up why he died, his members spread rumour that he died in the hands of the anti-cult group and even mobilised to embarrass the institution but for the intervention of the security agents. Prof Okafor, who was shocked to his marrow that such cultists still exist in the university despite the numerous op portunities given them to renounce said, “Devil has taken over some youths” but vowed to deal with cultists ruthlessly in the university. Though a conflicting report insisted that the dead man was killed by anti-cult group while torturing him to confess his membership, this the management of the university insisted was false. The Police have, however, taken over the institution to restore peace after addressing genuine students. They requested for information on those student cultists shooting during the aborted protest.

How to make students pass UTME — Educationist

The major reason accounting for the failure of candidates in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is the inability of many schools to make e-learning a priority, thus making it extremely difficult for candidates to manipulate computer in the exam hall. This revelation came from the Chief Learning Officer of Mandate Private Schools, Akesan, Igando, Lagos, Rev. Sunday Attah. This, according to him, arose from the failure of many schools to anticipate the introduction of computer- based exam in the country. His words: “The reason our students pass UTME excellently well every year is because we were able, far back as 2008, to predict the introduction of computer-based examination in Nigeria and we immediately made e-learning from primary school to SS3 a top priority. At a forum in South Africa in 2008 which I attended and was organized by the Nigeria based Accelerated Learning Group, we did a 5- year projection on educational development where we predicted the adoption of computer-based examination in Nigeria given our assessment of the situation in other parts of the world. There and then I decided to introduce computer–based examination in my school which I implemented on returning to Nigeria from South Africa .Thus, students of Mandate Private Schools were already doing computer-based examination even before JAMB introduced it. The first step we took was to transform our SS1-SS3 classes to e- learning classrooms. Each of the students has laptop and teachers’ notes are transferred to students’ laptops through wireless devices. We have given ourselves a time frame to introduce the intensive ICT education to our primary section, which will make pupils/students from Primary 1 to SS3 computer literate and internet friendly. These pupils and students are taught by competent computer teachers in the use of word processing, multimedia, internet, e-mail, desktop publishing, networking and computer aided designs. Their familiarity with computer gives them emotional and psychological stability in the JAMB-conducted computer- examination. This accounts for the high figure of about 95% of our students who gain admissions to various universities every year. I must quickly add that the reason for the failure of many students across the country in the examination is their lack of exposure to computer from their secondary schools. Expectedly, such students will lose self-confidence in the examination hall. Any student who is jittery in the examination hall as a result of his or her inability to operate computer will fail woefully.’’ This claim of overwhelming success in the UTME, says the school proprietor, is underscored by the large number of the school’s former students who have graduated as well as those who are presently studying in different universities around the world. The list of these undergraduate students, according to him, include Aminat Abolade who is studying Medicine at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Bola Owate also studying Medicine in the University of Lagos; Favour Attah is reading Management Information System at Covenant University, Ota, Ogun state, and Ashifor Oghene who is studying International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Benin. The Chief Learning Officer continued: “We also have Jerry Ogwo and ‘Kemi Omotade both of whom are studying Medicine in the University of Ukraine. Emmanuel Ichebi is reading Electrical Engineering at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi while David Ogwo and Ebenezer Chiazor are studying Computer Science and Electrical Engineering respectively at Covenant University. On their part, Praise Attah and Laurel Chiazor are students of International Relations and Economics respectively at Benson Idahosa University, Benin City while Adnan Mojeed is reading Aeronatic Engineering at the University of Ilorin.

Reason why student always perform very poor in Examination

>>Educationists, Prof. Mopea Omoegun, and Dr. Delight Olise, have accused parents of abandoning their parental roles. The development, according to the academics, has resulted in the increasing rate of examination malpractice and poor performance in schools among their children. Both spoke while addressing parents at this year’s “Covenant Child Mothers’ Day” organised by Covenant Child Academy, Ijesha, Lagos. Omoegun, a former Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Lagos, said that many parents refused to teach their children morals that would make them to be successful people in life. She explained that instead of devoting their time to cater for their children, parents prefer to go in search of material things. She said, “Mothers cannot give what they don’t have. Many of our parents do not have morals themselves. The society nowadays worships money and places it above honesty and hard work. The lack of home values in society is contributing to the increase in exam malpractice in schools. Even parents are aiding their children in the vice. “People are frustrating and puncturing the government’s efforts aimed at revamping the sector. Mothers should go back to the basics and serve as good role models for their children.” Olise, who is the Project Director of the academy, advised mothers to always seek advice from professionals in order to take informed decisions for their children. Stressing the importance of guidance and counselling in schools, she urged parents not to impose careers on the children. She added, “Parents need to get more educated. We are no longer in an era where parents choose careers for their children. Often times, we have seen situations where children perform badly in tertiary institutions because their parents imposed courses on them. “Children should be allowed to choose and study courses that they prefer, so that they can perform well. Every school should have guidance and counselling unit to guide both parents and their children.

ASUU/ASUP Fuel Hike Strike: What's The Situation Like In Your School?

>>The current issue of fuel price hike and the consequent industrial action by the Nigeria Labour congress and affiliates which include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and its polytechnic counterpart (ASUP) has left academic activities grounded in most of our tertiary institutions. As expected in situations like this, some students are not happy with the development while for others, it's a way of temporarily breaking away from the heat of academic work. You can call the latter a bunch of lazy students. That may be right or wrong depending on the motivation behind it. Anyway, we learnt that some schools have refused to join in the strike action. Is your school among? We want to know what the situation is like in your school and what is your take on this current situation. Share your views on the comment box.

10 Mistakes That Can Cost You First Class Degree - Education - Nigeria

As a graduate who came very close to finishing with a first class in engineering, I can easily identify errors that cost students the prestigious first class degree. I made one or two of these mistakes. Over the span of five years that I spent in the university, I saw lots of people make the same mistakes outlined here. Many brilliant students start with the initial dream of graduating with a first class, only to end up struggling to even finish with a 2.1. Obtaining a first class takes a great deal of hardwork, consistency, intelligence but most importantly discipline. Commit these errors and your chances of getting a first class will be very slim if not nil. 1. Womanizing – This is not about having a committed girlfriend in school which can even be very distracting. This is referring to keeping strings of girlfriends while in school, or pursuing anything in skirt. I am not speaking for or against womanizing in school. But womanizing is the quickest way of ensuring that your dream of graduating with a first class vanishes into thin air as your attention towards your academic studies will be greatly divided. 2. Not starting well – Except UNIBEN which notably operates CGPA system that is based on percentage depending on undergraduate level, all other universities operate a cumulative system based on credit load of individual courses. Most first class graduates build a solid foundation in the first 2 years in school. Thereafter, they ensure they do not fall below the boundary. Not having a high CGPA in your first 2 years means that you will not have any buffer during tough academic times, as the going may get tougher as you progress and your CGPA may become progressively lower. Your academic standing after your first 2 years can make or mar your chances of graduating with a first class. In addition, having a high CGPA may help build you gain respect amongst students or even lecturers who may be careful when marking your scripts so as not to make mistakes. 3. Placing less significance on small unit courses – Yes, some courses may carry smaller credit units but they count. Such courses may be electives and general courses. Cumulate all those courses and you will surprised about how big the effect can be. Every ‘A’ grade matters especially if you just on the edge, and there may be moments when it is the smaller unit courses that keep you above the boundary. One of the critical moments that defined my final CGPA was a 2- unit course that dropped my CGPA from a potential 4.51 to a 4.47 in my penultimate semester. 4. Not studying hard enough – I need not say much about this. Studying hard does not necessarily mean spending long hours reading in classes. Studying hard involves studying with high level of intensity and depth within a study period. The difference between a first class student and others is the attention to detail when studying. I use myself as an example. I remember that eventhough I sometimes spent hours reading, I was always too lazy to solve sample problems. In many cases, I overestimated my level of assimilation. I sometimes got away with it in exams but it cost me a few important A’s which would have made significant differences in my final CGPA. 5. Not taking internship and project work seriously – SIWES (internship) is mainly for science and engineering students. Internship has a combined credit load of about 12 – 15 units depending on the course and the institution. Imagine what damage a ‘B’ can do a first class student! You don’t necessarily have to work for a top company as an intern. Sloppiness in filling log books, poorly written internship report, and inadequate preparation towards defense of industrial attachment are enough to cost you an ‘A’ grade. Project and practical works also carry significant credit load as well. Practical work can be particularly tedious, and undisciplined students can be lax about it. 6. Allowing the opinion of mediocre students influence you – Average students will always be negative about their academic environment. They will talk about how tough it is to graduate with a 2.1 much less a first class. They will complain about how tough the courses or the lecturers are. They will remind you about the failure rate in the past. They will play the victim when they fail exams. They will congratulate themselves on how ‘lucky’ they are to escape a carryover with an E grade. They will continually demonize the school environment and their department. They will never say anything but positive things about the school. They will criticize everyone but themselves. Feed your mind with such thoughts from them and kiss goodbye to your dreams of graduating with a first class. 7. Not seeking help / information – Not seeking information can be harm your chances of finishing with a first. Information gathering is important in the pursuit of a first class. Having the right set of past questions, exam materials, handbooks, textbooks, etc. matters a lot.

Understanding The Law Of Potential Difference; A Secret For Making Exploits

What is this guy up to again did I just hear you say? Lol, there are so many things that will work real good for us as we try to make our way up the ladder of life. Truly there are few secretes that actually works but as far as the law of potential difference is concerned, if you get its concept, my dear you enjoy its result. I won't be viewing this term " law of potential difference" in the normal scientific term but rather as the natural meaning connotes . Take it or leave it, no matter how important and talented I can be, there are still some certain things that I can never do on my own without an external help. Many a time when I see people say there is nothing to do so they in turn become idle or unable to impact their world I wonder at the reason for their survival. Why on earth do you exist if you can't impact your world or get busy with a sustainable work. Everybody under the sun has been created with one potential or the other and one thing that also makes this concept special is the fact that in most cases your own personal potential might actually be rare where you are which now makes you kind of highly rated. When you are able to deeply understand that our abilities differs and nobody can exist in isolation which is a pointer to the fact that we will always need each other, you will clearly picture your route up the ladder of greatness.

NYSC 2016 Batch A Stream II Orientation Programme May Not Hold - DG

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Sulyman Kazaure has revealed that lack of funds may hinder the mobilization of 2016 Batch A Stream (II) prospective Corps members for orientation which was supposed to commence on Friday 20th, 2016.

The Director General who disclosed this during an interactive session with the senate committee on Sports in Abuja stated that the reason behind this is the fact that the money required for the exercise has not been provided by the federal Government even after several letters have been written to the appropriate agencies and even the presidency.

He however expressed hope that the Federal Government may make a last minute effort in providing the urgent and much needed fund for the programme.

In response, the Chairman of the senate committee, Sen. Obinna Ogba (PDP Ebonyi Central) assured the DG of senate's intervention on the issue stating that the problem will be tackled quickly by the Federal Government using every option available as NYSC is not something to joke with.

CBT will be improved for 2017 UTME – JAMB Registrar

>>The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has assured parents and candidates that it had addressed the logistics lacuna experienced in the 2016 examination, ahead of the 2017 exercise. The examination body said that henceforth, it would place more priority on centre accreditation, before the commencement of all its subsequent examinations. The Registrar of the board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos. JAMB Registrar Ojerinde blamed the logistics challenge on those vested with the responsibility of properly accrediting examination centres during the 2016 all Computer Based Test (CBT) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), saying that they compromised the process. The registrar, however, noted that the board had identified and sanctioned some of its staff who were involved in the accreditation scam. (NAN)

Unilorin Expelled 108 fresh students - VC reveals reason

>>The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has explained that 108 students who recently matriculated in the University were expelled from the University because they were discovered to have obtained admission into the institution through dubious means. Prof. Ambali disclosed this last Friday (May 13, 2016) while exchanging views with the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sam Okaula, who visited him in his office. The Vice-Chancellor noted that because of the stable academic calendar and culture of excellence in the University, the pressure to secure admission into the institution is high, resulting in some candidates seeking illegal and unauthorized ways to gain admission into the University. Prof. Ambali assured the Police Commissioner of the University's continuous cooperation, promising that the University would be ready to offer the Police any information they might require in the course of their work, saying, “We will volunteer any information you need to succeed”. The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the University's stance on zero tolerance for cultism and indecent dressing, stressing that it has helped to maintain sanity among the students. Prof. Ambali informed the Commissioner of Police that members of the force that might be interested in further education could take advantage of the opportunity provided by the University of Ilorin Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS). Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner of Police said he has great respect for the University of Ilorin, which, according to him, is one of the best universities in Africa because of its stable academic calendar. Mr. Okaula said that security is a collective responsibility of every member of a community, praising the University for not having a single student among the 118 students that were recently arrested for cult-related activities. He commended the Security Unit of the University of Ilorin for its focus, discipline, and professionalism, assuring the Vice-chancellor of the continuous support of the Police. The Commissioner of Police disclosed that the Police Force has adopted scientific investigation method, noting that some of the officers in the Force would require more education as he pleaded with the Vice-Chancellor to assist them in securing admission to improve their capacity to be able to better deal with crimes in the country. The CP was accompanied by ACP Akeem Yusuf, ACP Abubakar A. Yahaya, ACP Polycarp S. Kpai, CSP Nzota Chidi and SP Salihu T. Mynmrioles. Also on the entourage were DSP Fabode Moses, ASP Ajayi Okasanmi, ASP Eludire O. Clement, ASP Afolabi Olaibi, SP Onysabo Oshoka and ASP Ikoyi Isaiah. The Vice-Chancellor was joined to welcome the visitors by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji; the Registrar, Mr. E. D. Obafemi; the Deputy Bursar, Mr. O. Ogunbiyi; the Chief Security Officer, Mr. T. Tijani; the Principal Assistant Registrars in the Vice-Chancellor's Office, Mr. A. Sayuti; Mr. K. K. difference between offered Admission and considered for Admission

>>The two popular terms used by most Nigeria universities and polytechnics '' Offered admission and consider for admission '' will be discuss briefly for better understanding. Offered Admission: it simply means you have been admitted into the school and you have been offered admission to study in one of the approved department. Anyone offered admission can now proceed to make payment for acceptance fee and Admission notification and letter will also be issued by the school. Such candidate will now be regarded as a bona fide student of the school. Consider for Admission: many candidates always fall under this category and it does not necessarily mean you will be offered admission. What it really mean is that you have meet the school admission requirement and you will be review further to see if you are eligible to be among the few candidates that will be admitted or not. Any candidates who fail to meet up with the school admission requirement will not be considered for admission.

List of Approved Nigerian Universities for E-learning programme

The general public is hereby informed that whereas the National Universities Commission (NUC) maintains its stand that online degrees are not accepted in Nigeria at the moment, this does not include the approved Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme run within the shores of Nigeria. The Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme is a legitimate and well thought out pilot e-learning initiative. It is a Public Private Partnership between the National Universities Commission (NUC), Park Associates E-Learning Group, and four federal universities. Its goal is to provide new opportunities for students to access university education in Nigeria. The four Participating Universities are: i. University of Uyo; ii. National Open University of Nigeria; iii. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; and iv. University of Maiduguri. Students enrolled in the Programme can select any of the following undergraduate degree programmes: Economics, Banking & Finance, Accounting, Business Administration and Marketing for which they have requisite qualifications. The Programme for now is only available for candidates who wish to obtain BSc Degree in Economics. The Commission wishes to use this medium to allay all fears and doubts concerning the legitimacy or NUC endorsement of the Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme. This is one of the avenues that the National Universities Commission is exploring to increase access to university education without compromising quality. Students in the Programme are therefore advised to continue to pursue their studies without fear and prospective applicants are encouraged to enrol. Concerned parents, guardians, students and the general public may contact the Commission for further clarification on the Programme under reference.

Uniabuja Suspend SUG president- see reason

>>Uniabuja SUG President Suspended Over Alleged Fund Looting The uniabuja SUG parliament takes a bold step, by suspending chris ifeanyi from the SUG presidency. Chris ifeanyi, who’s been stripped off, of his uniabuja SUG presidential power, due to several funds looting allegations labelled against him, shows no sign of regret nor guilt, as he denied all the allegations labelled against him, in front of uniabuja SUG Parliament speaker. 9jaflaver news team, who dogged dip into this issue, found out that, chris ifeanyi bribed the previous SUG president “pelumi” who’s very influential, politically, and socially in Uniabuja campus and the student affairs. The reason to such bribe by chris ifeanyi, was to cover all the loop holes that might make him loose his position as the SUG president, and also to seek for very powerful back-bones that’ll help him retain his presidential position, which seems to be collapsing gradually. Chris ifeanyi who now lacks trust among his fellow uniabuja comrades, due to his high rate of funds looting, and embezzlement, is now facing serious charges of 4million naira theft from the uniabuja SUG treasury. Chris ifeanyi also collected the sum of 1million naira for an assignment to Lagos, but the funny fact was that, chris ifeanyi hid in abuja, forfeited the journey, pretended to be in lagos carrying out the assignment, while he hid himself in a hotel located in abuja, wuse town. A co-comrade of uniabuja didn’t believe his eyes when he spotted chris ifeanyi entering the hotel while wearing a short and a singlet, seems he came out from the hotel for a quick shopping. So, the uniabuja SUG parliament took the bold step of suspending “chris ifeanyi” as the uniabuja SUG president, till further notice. So

AAUA crises continue as student beg for reduction in 15,000 reparatory fee

>>UNEASY calm presently pervades the 17 year old Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, owned by the Ondo State Government. In the last one month, all has not been well with the institution following a disagreement among the university management, students and the Akungba community, which hosts the institution. Named after the former governor of the state, Chief Adekunle Ajasin, the institution has been enmeshed in avoidable crisis in the last one month. Within the space of one month the institution had witnessed an upheaval that led to its closure. As if that was enough, the university authority has released names of students in various levels that were expelled and suspended indefinitely for alleged cult activities, exam malpractices and alleged destruction of the institution's properties during a violent protest. In all, 23 students who are in their third year, were suspended indefinitely for their involvement in cult activities and destruction of the university properties while six others were expelled for examination misconduct and impersonation. The students on April 9, went on rampage when a 200 level student of the department of Economic Education in the institution, Ojo Afolabi Daniel died during an accident involving two commercial motorcycle operators popularly called Okada. But the student union leaders have dissociated the students from the rampage which destroyed the institution's properties and that of individuals in their host community. They fingered miscreants, who hijacked the students' peaceful protest to wreck havoc in the community. Over 40 persons including students were arrested and detained by police after the bloody protest. Vanguard gathered that what infuriated the students, leading to the eventual violent protest was the cause of death of their colleague, who was conveyed in the university ambulance to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo for medical attention. Students protest The aggrieved students protest was however reportedly hijacked by some miscreants and this led to the destruction of the university health centre, the restaurant and shops. Properties belonging to some individuals within the community, were either looted or destroyed by the protesters. It took the intervention of the regent of Akungba Akoko, Princess Oluwatoyin Omosowon, who assured the school authorities that the community would not launch reprisal attacks on the students upon resumption at campus before the authorities of the University announced that the student should resume next week Monday. Reports had it that fear had gripped the University authorities and the students that their host community may transfer their aggression following the mayhem unleashed on the people during the protest. Dispelling the speculations of a reprisal attack, Princess Omosowon told the University Management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun who visited her that “I want to state unequivocally that there is no truth in such a report. Though some members of the community are aggrieved over the unwarranted attack on them and the disruption of their lawful trading and economic activities, no one is planning any attack whatsoever. I want to assure the university community that my people are not planning any attack on the students. They are our children.” Omosowon was quick to add that “I have appealed to my people that what happened was one of the prices we have to pay for hosting the university that has brought a lot of economic and social changes to the town.” In his response, Prof Ajibefun commended the people of Akungba community for showing restraint in dealing with the protest which he said was hijacked by miscreants. Damages levy Another showdown seems to be brewing as the students are poised to reject the imposition of N25,000 damages levy/ reparation fees on each of the over 15,000 students of the institution. They have vowed to resist the extortion by the institution arguing that the amount they are asked to pay as reparation levy, was not commensurate with the properties destroyed during the protest. Speaking with Vanguard, the Student Union President in the institution, Adegbola Oluyemi said the money was on the high side and pleaded with the school management to review it downwards. He said: “We are appealing to the school to look into the money, it is too much, cutting the head is not the solution to headache, we are also calling on the governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko to wade into this matter, we don’t want to protest again but the school should reduce the money.” VC talks tough The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Ajibefun has vowed that criminal elements masquerading as students would not be awarded the University’s certificate so that the name of the university is not tarnished. According to him, “the Management of the institution is committed to positioning the University among the best globally.” Meanwhile, a statement issued by the institution acting registrar
